MUSIC

Five years in the making, Maria Alejandra Quintanilla's debut solo project, Irrefragible Laws, represents a life of experiences that shape her views on life and art as transdisciplinary. Suffused with lyrical impulses that elude simple definition, this album + art book explores temperaments and techniques that touch on the weight of urbanity, the intimacy of nature's healing, the flux portraits of home, and the tipping edge between silenced voices and voiced silences in a pandemic and post-pandemic era. Extended vocal techniques, acoustic/electronic connections, and field recordings celebrate this work as multi-layered, openly associative, and strikingly undisguised.

Seven Courses is the first single release by Maria Alejandra Quintanilla. Inspired by the Oscar award-winning Danish drama, Babette’s Feast, Seven Courses was spontaneously composed at the end of a 9-hour studio session and post-edited with “at home” field recordings that invite you into the intimate world of living and dreaming in small spaces and moments. The official music video was set in a miraculous sunlit corner of Porto, Portugal after days of flooding from Storm Elsa; conceived, filmed and post-edited by Maria.

Breathing Taiwan is a visceral journey, an otherworldly tribute to the unheard stories of Taiwanese ancient culture and its fascinating history. Through the percussive sounds of native instruments such as the tatuk we are immediately transported to the indigenous landscapes of Taiwan. Once arrived, we can witness the echoes of deep pain yet a profound sense of pride and celebration through the aural rituals of ancestry. This music is as much a symbolic interpretation as it is an immersive experience into a world of wordless emotions that are altogether universal.
